Celebrating International Tennis Day: How Luxilon Drives Tennis Forward

International Tennis Day is an opportunity to celebrate the rich heritage and exciting future of tennis –  a sport cherished by millions worldwide. This day is not just a tribute to the iconic matches and legendary players but also an acknowledgment of the game's global impact and continued evolution.

Tennis, originating from the French game 'jeu de paume' in the late 12th century, is now a highly strategic and competitive sport, renowned for its intense rallies and unique scoring system. It has continued to evolve in recent years as new innovations and advancements help players unlock new levels of performance.

Here at Luxilon, we’ve been pioneering tennis string technology since 1959. Known for our precision-engineered strings that enhance playability, our mission is to drive the sport forward with every serve, volley, and groundstroke. International Tennis Day allows us to reflect on the changing face of tennis and its role in fostering a spirit of competitiveness and fair play among athletes worldwide.

Changing the Game with Polyester String

Every piece of equipment plays a key role in shaping a player's performance, from the racket's design to the type of footwear used. Traditionally in tennis, rackets were strung with natural gut due to its elasticity, tension retention, and responsive feel. This string choice supported a style of play that valued precision over power. Rallies were long, emphasizing artistry and tactical maneuvering, with players relying on the soft, forgiving nature of natural gut to execute skillful volleys and drop shots.

The year 1997, however, marked a revolutionary shift in the way that tennis was played. Luxilon supplied Gustavo Kuerten with polyester strings for his legendary victory at the French Open and the world’s eyes turned to his equipment. The popularity of polyester string exploded overnight and dramatically changed how the game was played. Polyester's durability and its ability to facilitate heavy spin completely altered the dynamics on the court.

Players could now generate more power from the baseline, turning tennis into a game of high-energy exchanges and aggressive shots. This shift not only influenced the types of rackets players chose but fundamentally transformed playing styles. Polyester’s unique qualities have been tested in controlled experiments, which confirm that the low friction between polyester strings significantly contributes to increased spin, though the precise mechanisms continue to be explored.
